What steam carpet cleaning actually is

Despite the name, there is no steam blasting involved. A heated cleaning solution is rinsed into the carpet pile and then pulled straight back out by a powerful vacuum, taking loosened soil with it. The proper name is hot water extraction, and it is the method most carpet manufacturers expect to be used on domestic carpets.

The difference from a hire machine is the power of the extraction. A weak machine leaves more water and more detergent behind, which is why carpets sometimes look worse a few weeks after a DIY clean.

Our steam carpet cleaning process

  1. Look first. We check the fibre, the backing, the worst areas and anything that will not shift, and tell you before we start.
  2. Dry vacuum. Loose grit comes out first. Water turns dry soil into mud.
  3. Pre-treat. Traffic lanes, doorways and marks get a solution matched to the fibre and given time to work.
  4. Agitate. The pile is worked so the solution reaches the base of the fibres.
  5. Rinse and extract. Hot water extraction removes the loosened soil and the cleaning solution together.
  6. Groom and dry. The pile is set in one direction and we leave airflow advice so it dries as quickly as the room allows.

How long carpets take to dry

Most domestic carpets are dry to walk on within a few hours, but it depends on the carpet, the weather and how much air is moving. Opening windows or running the heating helps. Thick wool and damp winter days take longer. We will tell you what to expect for your rooms before we leave.

What goes wrong when it is done badly

Over-wetting is the big one. Too much water soaks the backing and underlay, which can leave brown marks wicking up as it dries, a musty smell, or shrinkage on some carpets. Leaving detergent in the pile is the other common fault. Sticky residue attracts dirt, so the carpet re-soils quickly. Both are avoided with proper extraction and the right amount of solution, not more.

Steam carpet cleaning questions

Is steam cleaning safe for wool carpets?

Usually yes, with the right temperature and a wool-safe solution. Wool is cleaned more gently than synthetic carpet. Tell us if you know the carpet is wool or a natural fibre such as sisal or seagrass, which need a different approach.

Do I need to move furniture?

Small items such as lamps, ornaments and anything on the floor are best moved before we arrive. Mention larger furniture when you enquire so we can plan around it.
